During the summer and fall, monsoon season in 2022, Pakistan confronted what experts called the worst floods in its history, notably one of the worst humanitarian disasters the country has faced in a decade. From June to October, excessive rainfall, landslides, and catastrophic floods resulted with over 1700 people dead, and approximately 15 billion USD worth of damages. Over 33 million people were displaced, alongside the destruction of homes, farms, land, crops/food, and livestock. One-third of Pakistan was underwater.
As the country commemorated its 75th Anniversary of independence this past August 2022, it soon had to confront a massive humanitarian crisis. The floods rang the alarm on the questions of climate change, sustainability, water governance and management in Pakistan and around the world. They occurred on top of Pakistan’s already deteriorating economic and political instability, and another significant transition of power earlier this year.
The estimated damages of the floods will cost billions of dollars in the years ahead. Multilateral and bilateral entities stepped up in their pledge to support Pakistan, and work with the Government and local agencies in meeting this challenge. International and local aid remains insufficient to match the ongoing damages to cross-cutting development sectors in Pakistan, including infrastructure and health.
We want to help.
While this is a modest auction fundraiser, we hope it will also help raise awareness for the humanitarian challenges that Pakistan faces and will continue to face, amid these disastrous floods, the climate challenges, and beyond.
